What tree drives mosquitoes away and attracts bees and butterflies? It’s the catalpa. The leaves are heart-shaped and 20 cm wide. The catalpa has the largest leaves of any tree that grows in our climate. The scent of its crushed leaves drives away mosquitoes and flies. The catalpa is known for its trumpet-shaped flowers. They smell wonderful. The flowers bloom during the summer. They are white on the outside and speckled with purple and yellow inside. Perfect for bees and butterflies. After they bloom, the tree produces bean pods. Before the leaves fall in the autumn, they will turn yellow. We can’t wait.
We deliver the catalpa as bare-root stock: just the bare branch and roots. The branch is freshly removed from the soil. This gives it additional strength, enabling it to branch out faster than trees in a nursery pot. Trees from bare-root stock adapt to their new environment more easily as well. They grow better and they’re more economical.
We water the catalpa a lot after planting. This tree does not enjoy dry soil. During drier periods, give the plant extra water. The catalpa should be planted in full sun. They can also be planted in the garden or in a sturdy planter on a patio, roof terrace or balcony. It is essentially a natural garden parasol. You should pollard the tree once a year. Pollard means to remove the crown.
